Mem Memoirs: Issue 7

The Mem Memoirs booklet is a product of the documentation project of Masahat for Sexual and Gender Diversity in the Nile Valley (Egypt and Sudan). In this issue we sail between three stories, from three maps and in three dialects, where the same tale repeats itself.

From El Sharabiya in Cairo, to the alleys of Bahri in Khartoum, to the Al Mujahid neighbourhood in Tripoli, they set out swaying between two questions: “Who am I?” and “Why am I not allowed to be?”

We witness and pass through family betrayal, sexual violence, security crackdowns, people doubting who they are, and the harsh journey from a homeland that was never a home, to an exile that doesn’t pretend to be one; and healing in between it all, and life in spite of everything.
